Your Blood Sugar Levels

Your blood sugar levels

Managing your blood sugar levels is an uphill task. You must be aware of the fact that your daily routine and lifestyle contributes greatly to the rise and fall of your blood sugar level. Diabetes patients are always advised to lead a disciplined life. If your blood sugar level is maintained within the target range, you will live a healthy, happy and long life. Some extra attention needs to be paid to your food and medication if you are a blood sugar patient.

Food

A healthy diet is the most important component of a blood sugar management plan. It is not just the type of food you eat that affects your sugar levels. The amount you eat and the time of taking food also matters a lot. The ways in which you can be consistent with your diet plan is mentioned beneath:

• The blood sugar level remains the highest two hours after taking food. This predictable pattern can help you control your blood sugar to a great extent. If you eat the same amount of food, at the same time everyday then your blood sugar will be in control to a great extent.
• Even out the amount of carbohydrates intake. Carbohydrates affect blood sugar more than proteins or fat. Eating the same amount of carbs everyday is a good technique of controlling sugar levels in blood.
• A good coordination of medication and meals is another important factor in controlling blood sugar. Little food along with insulin may lead to severe low blood sugar, which may prove fatal. Similarly plenty of food may also cause a sudden rise in the sugar level. Thus the amount of food must be in proportion to the medication.

Exercise

Physical activity is another factor, which helps you to keep your blood sugar in control. Exercising causes muscles to lose glucose for energy. Regular work out sessions improves body’s response to insulin. Thus you can very well understand the importance of physical activity in a diabetes management chart. The more vigorously you work out the effects remain longer. Surprisingly light exercising like gardening, a little walking and housework are also beneficial for the blood sugar patients. It is suggested that you consult a doctor before following a exercise regime. A few things to be remembered by blood sugar patients while exercising:

• If you are on insulin you have to adjust your insulin doses before physical work out sessions. Don’t exercise right after taking insulin injections. Wait for sometime and then start working out. Its better to ask your doctor for the right advice.
• Check your blood sugar levels before and after working out. If you take insulin regularly, your blood sugar level is lowered to a great extent. Drinking fluids while exercising is a good way to stay fit. If you feel fatigued, dizzy or have chest pain, stop exercising immediately.

Medications

The medications designed for lowering your blood sugar level has to be stored properly. Size of dose and timing is essential to have the desired effect. Don’t take any medicine without consulting your doc. If alternate medication is prescribed, follow it just the way you are instructed to do.

A comprehensive medication, food and exercise regime will let you control your blood sugar levels throughout your life.
